After success with the youth team Bates found a regular spot in the Reserves team but it proved significantly more difficult for Guy to break into the first team as he was fighting for a place behind established strikers such as Alan Shearer, our own Shola Ameobi and Patrick Kluivert.

The lack of opportunities for Bates led him to seek a release from Newcastle and headed to Australia in January 2005, where he signed for the Newcastle United Jets. Bates played and scored regularly in the Jets' pre-season campaign, but sadly did not make a big impact with the A-League team.
